FedWorld is a comprehensive central
access point for searching, locating, ordering and acquiring government
and business information. In 1992, FedWorld
was established by The National Technical Information Service( NTIS), an
agency of the U.S Department of Commerce, to serve
as the online locator service for a comprehensive inventory of information
disseminated by the Federal Government. This new service assisted
agencies and the public in electronically locating Federal Government information,
both information housed within the NTIS repository and information
they made accessible through an electronic gateway of more than 100 Government
bulletin boards. What started out as a small dial-up access
system has grown tremendously over the last four years in size, technology,
and content. Today, the FedWorld Information
Network consists of an integrated network offering the public broad access
to information including: World Wide Web; Over 20 databases; File Transfer
Protocol; Bulletin Board Service; Subscriptions.
The FedWorld Information Network
works to bring government closer to the public. Browse the Federal Job
Announcement Database, to review the current
jobs available within the U.S. Government. If you are planning vacation
or business travel, surf US Customs Traveler Information. Search
the Internal Revenue Service to review and download the tax forms, instructions
and publications that are available for tax filing. If business
information sounds more interesting, FedWorld can
link you to the U.S. Business Advisor. FedWorld
and NTIS offer simple, global access to government and business information
in the most efficient and cost effective manner to you, their customer.
NTIS is a self-supporting federal agency which does not receive appropriated
government funds. Therefore, NTIS is run like a business to
provide a service - they bring information from around the world to the
desktop and to the doorstep.

Argument Calendar: A daily listing of the cases to be heard in oral argument for the current term. Also, the full text of the decision may be downloaded in WordPerfect and MS Word formats. Decisions appear here usually within a day or two after they are handed down. USSC+ OnLine: Search 1953 - 1997 Cases. Users may search over 6,700 cases in the USSC+ collection by subject matter, and may browse an electronic table of cases. Classic Case of the Week. Each week they post a leading United States Supreme Court from earlier years for online viewing. The cases are chosen from among those the Supreme Court itself has most often cited in its subsequent opinions. Note that not all services at this site are free; some are fee-based.
This site contains the full text of 7,407 U.S. Supreme Court Decisions from 1937 to 1975. Decisions are available as ASCII text files that can be read on your browser's screen or saved to your hard drive and accessed by using most word processor programs. Most Decisions are very large and may take a while to download if you have a slow internet connection. After conducting a search, the search results screen lists the size of the Decision in bytes so that you can esimate download times. Currently available search strategies are simple. They expect that most users will know the case name of the decision they need and will most likely use the Case Name search option. Otherwise, you may use the full text search option, but beware that the size of the database and the number of words (14.5 million) may require that conduct a number of searches to find what you are looking for.
This site is maintained by Cornell University's Legal Information Institute (LII). The institute offers Supreme Court opinions under the auspices of Project Hermes, the court's electronic-dissemination project. This archive contains (or will soon contain) all opinions of the court issued since May of 1990. In addition, their collection of over 300 of the most important historical decisions of the Court is available on CD-ROM and (with reduced functionality) over the Net. During their first four years of operation, the LII simply built finding aids -- such as tables of party names and searching tools -- which in turn pointed to the Hermes archive at Case Western Reserve University. They have now acquired their own Hermes subscription and begun streamed conversion of the decisions into HTML at the time of release. They have also converted the entire CWRU backlist to HTML, and have begun working to fill some long-standing gaps in the Hermes collection. As the foregoing implies, there are still some omissions and errata in this collection, and a high likelihood that in the process of conversion they've missed a few links here and there. If you run into a problem which is not mentioned in their list of errata and items under construction, do let them know.
Other information provided at this site include: Historic decisions (where 'historic' means 'before 1990') The LII collection of historic decisions of the US Supreme Court contains over 300 of the court's most important decisions through the whole period of its existence, and can be purchased on CD-ROM.
Information about the Court They provide a variety of information related to the court, including: the court calendar for this term; the current schedule of oral arguments; a gallery of the justices, including pictures, biographies, and lists of decisions by the current members of the court; the Supreme Court's rules, and information about the court's organization, authority, and jurisdiction; and a glossary of terms for those who don't speak legalese.

HOW OFTEN IS THOMAS UPDATED?
As soon as new files are received from the Government
Printing Office, they are indexed and made available for searching. The
bill text files are
updated several times throughout the day. The Congressional
Record files are received once a day, when Congress is in session, usually
in the
morning. Committee reports arrive intermittently, after
they are published by GPO, and are indexed when they arrive.
Information about bills in the Bill Summary & Status
files is made available one day after it is entered into the system. Depending
on the amount
of legislative activity, inputting of the legislative
status may lag behind. Bill digests usually are available within 48 hours
of the introduction of the
bill; likewise, subject terms may take several days to
be assigned to bills. However, very long or complicated bills may take
additional time to
digest and index. A table of contents is supplied for
these bills, until the digest can be written.
Adopted by convention of States, September 17, 1787; Ratification completed, June 21, 1788.
