Internet Resources For Travelers

This web site has links to a variety of travel services placed under the following categories:

ITN: The Internet Travel Network

The Internet Travel Network appears to be the only service of its kind. Not only was this the first authorized World Wide Web interface to a national reservation system, but their system lets you route your booking through a travel agency in your area. If there is a travel agency you like anywhere in the world that is not listed on their system, you can let them know. Although their system may currently seem more oriented towards those in the United States, they are working to gradually remove those differences.

ITN gets its travel information through a direct feed from the major CRS reservation systems. When you make a travel inquiry using their interface, you are getting real-time information straight from the same sources used by travel agents worldwide.

You can get real-time, last-seat availability and pricing for airline, car and hotel reservations 24 hours per day at no charge. This means that you can see exactly what your travel agent sees (and in many ways, even more) without going through the tedious process of transcribing over the phone with pencil and paper. In addition to being able to order tickets and reserve seats at any time of the day and night, nearly every agency online with them will waive any ticketing fees they may have if you order via this interface. It appears that you can actually save yourself money using ITN! Since many of these agencies also offer free same-day local courier delivery, this means that the reasons for going direct to the airline have been virtually eliminated. You can get your ticket at the same price, sooner, and with a higher quality of personalized service by sticking with your local professional.

They are not a seller of tickets; they do not add a surcharge to the standard available rates. The fares shown in their system are the lowest currently available rates given the parameters you specify. If the prices you see there seem high then you might try reading their hints page.

Currently there are no barriers to using ITN for Internet users. They do not ask for your credit card number, they do not make you establish an account over the telephone first. They do, however, ask that you register, simply so that you can create a free account which will allow you to customize the ITN interface to your needs.

They suggest that you make a few sample inquiries now, and then remember to go back and use them when you find you have to travel.

Lonely Planet

The travel information at this site is designed to kickstart your travels and help you on your way. Just a click away is the latest travel information sourced from their authors, researchers and fellow travellers. Site contents include:

Destinations: Information on specific countries covered under headings such as follows: Facts at a Glance; Environment; History; Economy; Culture Events; Facts for the Traveller; Money & Costs; When to Go; Attractions; Off the Beaten Track; Activities; Getting There & Away; Getting Around; Recommended Reading; Lonely Planet Guides; Travellers' Reports; On-line Info

Health Information: Who can appreciate the joys of exploring exotic locations when you'd sell your grandmother for directions to the nearest toilet, they ask? Successful travelling is healthy travelling. All it takes is a bit of planning, eating carefully while you're away, and recognising the early warning signs of possible health-care disasters. The list of potential ailments described looks daunting, but a little knowledge of basic precautions - and a little luck - can ensure that you experience little more hardship than jetlag, upset stomach, too much duty-free bevvy, blisters...

Postcards: This section has travellers' reports on most countries.

On the Road: They have put together a series of regional slide shows to give you a taste of the world

Detours: There's nothing worse than feeling that your journey has been mapped out for you by others, so they encourage adventurous travellers to strike out on their own and get off the usual tourist routes. There are still plenty of places considered too remote, too difficult or too dangerous for the majority of tourists to get to. Many of these places are wrapped in mystique and have an allure to seasoned travellers for exactly these reasons. These detours are not for everyone. They're for travellers who don't expect too many creature comforts along the way, and who are enchanted by the idea of getting to some of the lost and forgotten places on the planet.
