Advancing Women (International Network For Women in the Workplace)

Women face different challenges than men in the workplace. Women everywhere can start to meet these challenges by networking with each other. Over 35 million people are on the Net today worldwide, many of them women. Advancing Women provides tools for networking and a global electronic support system for women which can benefit you greatly.

Networking is sharing....information, ideas, resources, opportunities. Psychologists who have studied networking tell us women are better at it than men. Since they were little girls, women have been taught to share, to meet other people's needs. Men do not network as well because it is more difficult to admit they have needs and there is often a fear of appearing vulnerable. Consequently, men bond together in ways which make them feel more powerful, and one way of achieving that is by excluding people. Historically, women have been excluded from many male dominated organizations, from the boardroom to the golf course.

Studies have shown, however, that women are learning daily to network more effectively with other women and the quality of the information, contacts and opportunities they receive is equal to that of male networks.

Advancing Women has witnessed first hand the empathy which develops and the bond created when women network to meet these challenges. All women everywhere share similar experiences of having been excluded or having confronted a barrier in a male dominated organization. All those oppressive systems and outdated stereotypes are lifted when women meet on common ground and create a support system for each other.

Relationships you develop networking may grow into strategic alliances where, for example, a woman who books conventions may meet a woman who supervises tours of the city. Although the relationship may begin by these two discussing issues women confront in the workplace, their professional respect for each other may grow to a point where they begin recommending the other and sending her business. These are informal strategic alliances which can benefit you greatly.

Advancing Women offers MessageBoards, where you can leave your message, in English or Spanish, to start discussions with other women in the workplace in the United States, Canada or around the globe. They find that women share many of the same experiences in the workplace, whether they are in Norway or or Argentina. And never underestimate the power of direct communication using the simple power of email. If you want to inform, network, or mobilize you should be contacting other women's networks. By using email, which is becoming the commonly accepted business and professional norm, you can communicate more informally and quickly, collapse time, and increase your own contacts and resources. If you wish to let other women in the workplace know how to reach you, so you can begin networking, you may register your email address, with a brief description of your interests and what you'd like to communicate about, at Advancing Women Email Registry. This will enable other women in the workplace to learn if you have common interests and areas of concern and contact you either directly, or through our message boards. Remember, as women in the workplace, you are not alone in your attempt to gain equitable business rewards for the same work as men, whether you are an executive, an entrepreneur, an educator, technician or blue collar worker . A broad spectrum of organizations today have endorsed women's advancement as a central goal in their agenda. Women need to tap into the power of these organizations, join together, network with each other, and continue to institutionalize their goals and strategies.

DisInformation

DisInformation was designed to be the search service of choice for individuals looking for information on current affairs, politics, new science and the 'hidden information,' that seldom seems to slip through the cracks of the corporate owned media conglomerates. The goal is to get users to the information they seek, in the fastest, most efficient way possible. To that end, they're linking FIRST to a smaller, higher quality pool of websites, so someone looking for up-to-date news on the situation in Bosnia, for example, won't have to sift through endless webpages which say something like "Hi, I'm Dave. I think it's terrible what's going on in Bosnia. Here's a picture of my dog." Dave's homepage will be there, too (along with 30 million other WWW pages), but DisInformation ranks the results a little differently. The results which appear first will come from their 'hand selected' database, some accompanied with short reviews from their staff, and all from quality news sources such as 'Time Magazine's on-line component, Hot Wired, etc., 'liberal' newsources like 'The Nation,' and 'Atlantic Monthly, alternative sites like Z-Net and Mother Jones' 'MoJo Wire,' and other e-zines and websites they found interesting, provocative and essential. They are also indexing these sites more frequently than the other services do, so their database is, as they say, always 'hot off the presses,' and absolutely current.

Four11

Four11's goal is to provide the most reliable, centralized way for people who use the Internet to find and communicate with each other. Four11 claims that it was the first company to establish an effective "white pages" directory of this kind, and it has been the leader in providing directory services to the growing global Internet community. The Four11 directory is a free online search and listing service that includes several principal components:

Email Directory

With over 10 million unique listings, the Four11 Email Directory is the largest such directory offered by any company in the category. Customers can use information such as a person's name, company or organization, city, state, or domain name to find the email addresses of the people they would like to contact.

Information in the Email Directory comes from a variety of publicly available sources and from our users themselves. Over two million users have registered themselves in the Email Directory. When they register, customers supplement their listings with valuable incremental data such as location, current company or organization, college attended, and outside interests - books, movies, sports, etc. Registered Four11 users can then search for others with similar backgrounds or interests. Additional features available only to registered users include the ability to maintain personalized address books and to conduct sleeper searches (by which users are notified when awaited friends register with the service).

Telephone Directory

The Four11 Telephone Directory offers a complete listing of U.S. residential telephone listings and contains over 100 million names. As with the Email Directory, customers can use search parameters such as name, street, city and state to help them find the information they need.

Telephone Directory data is provided by Metromail, a subsidiary of R.R. Donnelly. Metromail has relationships with multiple RBOC that enable company to offer us the most up-to-date information available. Metromail is also dedicated to preventing the accidental inclusion of unlisted and unpublished information.

Net phone Directory

The Four11 Net phone Directory provides internet telephone contact information for users of Net phone hardware and software offered by several different manufacturers, including Connectix, Intel, Microsoft, White Pine (CU-SeeMe), and Smith Micro. The Net phone Directory also includes listings for other Net phones based on the H.323 communications standard.

In addition to providing the basic contact information, Four11 has worked to facilitate the process of finding and connecting with other Net phone users through Four11 Connect, a free software tool that works in conjunction with the Net phone Directory. Four11 Connect alerts the Net phone Directory when a particular user is online and registers the user's Internet address with the directory. To contact a particular person, the caller simply find that person's listing in the Net phone directory, checks to make sure he is online, and then launches the appropriate Net phone application to place a call to that person by simply clicking an icon.

Government Directory:

The Four11 Government directory provides customers with the email addresses and home page URLs for the White House, U.S. House and Senate representatives, and congressional committees.

Celebrity Directory

The Four11 Celebrity Directory offers email and street address information for a wide variety of different celebrities and their supporting fan clubs. The Celebrity Directory includes hundreds of listings for actors and actresses, business luminaries, famous authors, models, sports stars, and more.

International Services:

Four11 also offers customers foreign language translations of the full Four11 site. Through partnerships with France Telecomm and Olivetti, Four11 has acquired valuable international content that have helped the company to become a global leader in the internet directories business.

HotBot

HotBot is a fast, accurate tool for finding information on the vast and ever-growing Internet. HotBot periodically visits pages on the World Wide Web using a program called "Slurp the Web Hound." Slurp is an extremely fast "web crawler," or web robot, that uses parallel "network-of-workstations" technology to download over 10 million web pages a day from around the world. While one of the most aggressive web robots of its kind, Slurp is also built to avoid overwhelming web servers by not visiting a site too frequently. In addition, Slurp follows proposed standards for keeping robots out of particular sites and for keeping pages out of HotBot's index. Once Slurp has seen a page, a high-performance indexer processes its full text. The indexer generates a short abstract for the page, adding the abstract to a proprietary database that remembers which documents contain which words.
