Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA)
    The DIA states that it is the fifth-largest fine arts museum in the United States with holdings of over 60,000 works. Within its more than one hundred galleries, says the DIA, are paintings, sculpture, and graphic and decorative arts that reveal the scope and depth of human experience, imagination and emotion.

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts
    The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) is the most comprehensive fine arts museum in the upper midwest. The permanent collection includes outstanding works in seven curatorial areas with 85,000 objects spanning 4,000 years. Stedelijk Museum
    The Stedelijk Museum states that it is the most important museum of modern and contemporary art in The Netherlands. A lot of works are permanently on view from the Stedelijk Museum's famous collection of paintings and sculpture, drawings, prints, photographs, graphic design, applied art and design. There are always a number of frequently changing temporary exhibitions on view too. In short, a museum dedicated to the new. For more than 100 years! The collection from the Stedelijk Museum includes painting and sculpture, drawing and prints, photography, video, applied art, industrial design, posters and new media. 

    The Stedelijk Museum exhibits a permanent selection from its collection, which is oriented to various art disciplines: paintings, sculptures, drawing, prints and photograps, graphic design, applied art and design. To list some examples: Kirchner, Malevich, Chagall, Mondrian, Picasso, Newman, De Kooning, Nauman, Merz, Dibbets, Nauman. 

    'Classics' in modern art, such as Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse en Chagall, are important artists in this collection, as are Mondrian and Malevich, founders of abstract art. The Stedelijk is also known for the collection of post-war artworks. For example Appel, Baselitz, the Cobra group, Dibbets, Judd, Kiefer, De Kooning, Kounellis, Nauman, Newman, Merz, Polke and Ryman. In the future almost the whole collection will be accessible through the Internet at its site. For the time being, some examples in the exhibition, 'highlights from the collection,' are available at its site.

    A U.S. web site that provides basic information on museums in Paris is appropriately called Museums in Paris. It includes an interactive map of Paris. The musuems covered are sorted by category; by Metro stations and by RER stations.

Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
    The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has created an extensive art imagebase. They state: "The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is all about art access. We're committed to making our entire collection available online. With 60,000 works on paper our Imagebase is currently the largest searchable art imagebase in the world. " At their web site information on the following two musuems is also available: 

    "De Young Museum. The M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco's oldest museum, is located in Golden Gate Park and dates to the 1894 Midwinter Exposition. In the past 100 years, it has become the repository for the most comprehensive collection of American paintings on the West Coast, as well as major collections of African art, Oceanic art, art from the pre-Columbian Americas, and textile arts. " 

    "Legion of Honor. The California Place of the Legion of Honor, located in Lincoln Park, has been a San Francisco landmark since 1924. Overlooking the City and the Golden Gate Bridge it is one of the most dramatic museums in the country. Its collections span 4,000 years, from ancient Assyrian wall reliefs to paintings by Picasso, and include major holdings of Rodin sculpture, European masterpieces, and over 60,000 prints and drawings. "
