ArtServe (Art & Architecture mainly from the Mediterranean Basin)
19,000 Images of Art & Architecture mainly from the Mediterranean Basin. This server, in the Department of Art History at the Australian National University, offers access to around 18,500 images (NOT available elsewhere) - i.e. some 3.8Gb of data - all concerned in some way with the history of art and architecture.
Users should note, however, that because of the need to generate income if this server is to continue, ArtServe operates as a cost-recovery service. What this means is that the LARGE JPEG IMAGES (behind the thumbnail GIFs) CANNOT BE ACCESSED WITHOUT PAYMENT: when you try to do so, a Registration Form will appear and you will be invited to register for the service. Still, the site is worth visiting even for its thumbnail size images.
